Environment: the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
Social Cognitive Theory is about examine how ones environment and the people in it are contributing to their beliefs, values, and outcomes.
As a relationship coach, part of my success in helping someone to gain clarity regarding their life and or relationship(s) begins with understanding something about the environment in which their values & beliefs were handed down to them in their first environments (childhood) and then how those things have impacted how they respond and navigate relationships. For example, if someone grew up in a home of constant arguing and conflict, but nothing was ever resolved and everyone just "got over it", they are not likely to have health conflict resolution skills without proper training and/or education. For them, they have learn how to live and survive in an environment filled with arguments, negative banter, dismissive attitudes, and a withdrawal of affection when upset. Whenever I encounter this client, my question to them is this: What would it mean to go from surviving to thriving in a healthy, reciprocal, loving relationship? The look on their face says it all! They definitely want to know how they can achieve it and my job is to help them bridge the gap between where they are and where they are desiring to be. Let's get it, we've got work to do!
